<<NEC-Hitachi DRAM Joint Venture Named 'Elpida Memory'
September 28, 2000 (TOKYO) -- The NEC-Hitachi joint DRAM manufacturing company has its official name
finally after nine months since formation.

Provisionally called NEC-Hitachi Memory, Inc., established on Dec. 20, 1999, is now Elpida Memory, Inc.

"Elpida" is a name created by combining "elpina" which means "hope" in the Greek language and "d" which is
associated with "DRAM" and "Dynamic.">>

But it is the 28th in Japan. If you've ever lost a day in travel, you don't forget that lesson. My parents once lost their wedding anniversary... They didn't even pick it up on the way back!

Personally, I think the name is a stretch. Perhaps if they combined "elpina" with "x" meaning substitute anything here it would work. Or maybe "r" meaning random. Then the could substitute "v" for "p" ("v" meaning variable) and come up with Elvira. Now there's a name!

Sorry for rambling,

Al
