the financial stuff which is certainly the most easily quantifiable is a sympton of the qualitative stuff, not the cause of it

The quantitative stuff is also a lagging indicator. But it does give us some insight into when the network effects begin to trickle down to the income statement. It can also afford a rough questimate (in hindsight) of when critical mass was achieved and under what conditions. I would hope that that understanding might be applied qualitatively to future situations--however loosely or lacking in metrics.

It matters a lot, for example, whether NTAP's competitive advantage is one of cheap and flexible systems or derives from a proprietary and discontinuous technology in WAFL and DAFS. That qualitative judgment changes the quantitative game.
