because the pure play exchanges are not living up to the forrester estimates for transaction throughput. Why aren't people using them... imo because the backend isn't there - no integration. Viewing the online catalog is required these days... no one is willing to call for pricing from some mfg anymore but actually transacting through an exchange another story... some don't even confirm.

Cmrc has a part of their biz plan in owning the mega exchanges and this is great but only if they become viable businesses, last year this looked great but this year its a boat anchor. A pretty good pureplay exchange is ventro/chemdex and look at that chart - yuk. Ariba otoh sells software and are unaffected by exchange throughput as long as people still want to be online.

The motley fool had a good writeup of the difference between c1 and arba biz models and they are not as different as people think but cmrc is still perceived as transaction-only revenue (untrue). Well thats my take on it anyway. Eventually cmrc will be fine, it just takes time. Right now I'm happy to own them.
