Some earnings factors that many might not be considering will involve the use of derivatives to add (hopefully) to the bottom line. Yesterday, Microsoft announced that they will take a $350 million charge, which includes their loss from such derivatives. This announcement is one of the earliest that adhere's to FAB 133, effective July 1, governing how companies account for derivatives. I expect to be hearing from more companies during the coming earnings season.

For example, as long as a companies stock was rising, a company could generate additional revenue by using derivatives. Writing put options against their own stock provided good results as long as the stock moved upwards. Not so good if it moves downward.

Another factor to consider involves a companies stock positions in other companies. For example, INTC's position in MU is quite large and one would have to assume that MU's recent decline isn't helping the situation.

These are some factors that many analyst's may not be including in their most recent forecasts. If a company has problems in these areas the probability of missing the number will be much greater.

Just another set of factors to keep in mind when looking at possible investments/trades during the coming earnings period.

Susan, I especially like AREM from that list, it has seen very high volume recently as noted by one of the two head traders in supertraders. Seems like a volume leads price potential situation.
