Sony says behind production schedule for PlayStation 2

FOSTER CITY, Calif., Sept 27 (Reuters) - Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. on Wednesday said it was lagging in its production schedule for the PlayStation 2 video game console due to a component shortage, but said it would still still meet fiscal year 2001 shipping targets.

The Sony Corp. (NYSE:SNE - news) unit said in a news statement that it was a month behind schedule for production, but said the delays would not affect global PlayStation 2 shipments in the 2001 fiscal year.

The company aims to ship 3.0 million PlayStation 2 units by the end of March, also the end of the company's fiscal year 2001. It expected total worldwide production of 10 million units in the time period.

Sony said it would increase capacity to more than 1.0 million units from 400,000 a month to a target 1.4 million units monthly by the end of the calendar year.

The anticipated video game console is scheduled for an Oct. 26 U.S. release, with 500,000 units shipped at first, followed by 100,000 units per week. Sony said it anticipated shipping 1.3 million Playstation 2 units in North America through the winter holiday season.

Sony shares traded on the New York Stock Exchange closed down $9-5/8, or 8.8 percent, at $99-3/8.
