Merrill defends CSCO, Nortel
--10:18 am - By Tomi Kilgore
Analyst Michael Ching at Merrill Lynch said his outlook for Cisco Systems (CSCO: news, msgs) remains unchanged and views "any weakness as a buying opportunity," and reiterated his "buy" rating. This comes amid a downgrade of the company by Sanford Bernstein on concerns over spending by telecommunications carriers (see 9:43 item). Ching noted that "one of the big drivers of Cisco's growth ahs been the enterprise market, not the carrier market." Cisco is now trading down $1.50 at $$55.81. He also maintained his "buy" rating on Nortel Networks (NT: news, msgs), saying any weakness in its stock would be a "buying opportunity." Nortel is now off 63 cents at $59.
