speaking of microsoft....

i just read an oct 2000 pcworld mag article about registering software. it states that for two years, mistersoftee has been buying software over the net and examining it to determine whether it is legitimate.

their findings?

so far, more than 90 percent of the software the company has purchased from net auctions and other secondary channels on the internet has been counterfeit.

the article goes on to say that, sure, software execs have an interest in making piracy seem as dire as possible. but it concludes that since we all put up with those magnetic clamps stores attach to new clothes and cd's to keep us from stealing them, and since we all lock our doors when we leave our cars or homes..... then why should microsoft (or any other software company) have to rely upon the honesty of strangers?

Many thanks to you, Mr. Mark and Steve for getting me started. I guess you like Power Quest so I probably will too.

I have Norton Clean Sweep but I haven't had the nerve to delete any duplicates or orphans because I don't know enough to identify the file's function. Clean Sweep identified SO MANY candidates for oblivion that it's hard to believe that a two-day old system could build up so much junk.

I'm with you regarding preventive maintenance. It's a good thing...

Thanks again.
