That is true, and something one can sympathize with, given the fragility of their circumstances, supposing a catastrophic illness, for example. On the other hand, we have programs constructed when life expectancy was much lower, and those below 75 were much less healthy. The retirement age is too low, now, and we make make no real distinction among the indigent and the wealthy. One of the mistakes of Social Security was to sell it as a pension plan, as if one were owed the money, instead of a safety net for those who need an income supplement. Similarly with Medicare: we are saving the affluent from higher co- payments and premiums, instead of concentrating resources on those of modest means, and the system is suffering under the strain of an accelerating pool of retirees.......
