Analog Devices Announces Industry's First Single-Chip Internet Modem With TCP/IP Protocol Stack -- New modem is powered by eDevice's TCP/IP protocol stack for complete Internet connectivity ... Embedded Systems Conference eDevice Booth #5021 ... Only Single-Chip Modem including TCP/IP Protocol Stack SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Analog Devices, Inc. (NYSE: ADI - news) today announced a new single-chip modem-the industry's first to combine an embedded modem with a TCP/IP protocol stack on a single chip, thus offering complete Internet connectivity. The TCP/IP Stack and the integration have been developed by eDevice. The modem empowers low-cost and portable devices, as well as vending machines, kiosks and pickup/drop boxes, to connect to the Internet over any network that uses the TCP/IP protocol, without requiring a separate processor that contains the protocol stack. The announcement was made at the Embedded Systems Conference, which is taking place this week.
The compact single-chip modem features Analog Devices' low-power, FLASH- upgradeable, modem, based on an ADSST-218X series DSP and eDevice's SmartStack(TM) Internet-enabling software containing the TCP/IP stack, available with a modem data rate from V.32bis (14,000 bps) up to V.90 (56,000 bps).
``We see the Analog Devices' Internet modem powered by Smartstack bringing entirely new classes of devices and capabilities to the Internet, particularly for remote sensing, data collection, industrial control and remote diagnostics-all with equipment and appliances being able to communicate key information,'' said Mike Haidar, general manager, Software & Systems Technology Division, Analog Devices. ``Our single-chip Internet modem is the first of its kind designed to address the emerging 'Light' Internet Device market by giving OEMs the flexibility to connect a wide range of equipment and systems to the Internet for convenient information transfer; remote management; control and servicing; and e-mail transmissions. Analog Devices and eDevice share a common vision of the tremendous potential that embedded Internet technology has to offer.''
``Analog Devices' modem integrated with eDevice's SmartStack technology delivers complete and direct Internet connectivity with all the necessary protocols on a single DSP, while still leaving room for a client or signal processing application. OEMs can now design-in powerful Internet access capabilities in an easy-to-integrate, scaleable package,'' said Marc Berrebi, CEO and president, eDevice, Inc. ``From remote reading of utility meters to image transfers from your digital camera, we envision this compact, ready-to- use modem transforming the Light Internet Appliance market.''
The Analog Devices' Internet modem is currently available. The single- chip modem includes an ADSST-218X series DSP with the SmartStack TCP/IP stack from eDevice, modem code, an integrated controller (no separate microcontroller is required) and data pump, and is available in a 100-pin package. Prices for the single-chip modem with the SmartStack TCP/IP stack, software, licenses and a two-chip silicon DAA begin at $18.50 in quantities of 10,000.
