Chavez held an extremely hawkish speech at the recent OPEC meeting...comparing the price of a barrel of crude oil to that of a barrel of Coke ($78), a barrel of 'good wine' ($1,300), etc...

the delegates were impressed...he's a man after their heart, a champion of the third world. they followed the protests in Europe with glee, especially so as they were protests against energy taxation in which OPEC wasn't cast as the villain.

i think the Chavez' visit to Iraq was no coincidence...rather i think he's been acting as a go-between, perhaps conveying OPEC's contingency plan should the West manage to drive oil prices down. OPEC probably wants us to slowly get used to prices above $30...then they can drive them to $40....
