a thread that seemed both intelligent and respectful.

Well, I can be a bit of a devil...but others here see that the human element is kept both front and center.

Here are a couple of links to Laing. He was radical alright! He is very much worth reading. Your perception of illness will never be the same.

Nevertheless, I do have respect for the mental illness model but not as a pejorative (unless you're in an argument), but rather as an alternative to the moral and social disrespect that often accompany anti-social behavior. Certainly, I am not trying to advocate a society that can not judge the moral values that obtain amongst its members. But one must be careful. Its a slippery slope (now where have I heard that, recently?! LOL).

Here is a sample from his incredible book of poems, KNOTS:

R.D. Laing, Knots (1970)

There is something I don’t know that I am supposed to know.
I don’t know what it is I don’t know, and yet am supposed to know, And I feel I look stupid if I seem both not to know it and not know what it is I don’t know. Therefore, I pretend to know it. This is nerve-wracking since I don’t know what I must pretend to know. Therefore, I pretend to know everything.

Another tid-bit:

"She does not get what she wants from him

so she thinks he is mean.

She cannot give him what he wants from her

so he feels that she is greedy.

He does not get what he wants from her

so he feels that she is mean

and

he cannot give her what she wants from him

so he feels that she is greedy.

. . .

Jack feels Jill is greedy

because Jill feels Jack is mean

'Jill feels Jack is mean

because Jack feels Jill is greedy

Jack feels Jill is mean

because Jill feels Jack is greedy

Jill feels Jack is greedy

because Jack feels Jill is mean.

--- R. D. Laing, 'Knots'

Don't take it that his thinking was simple. To follow Laing, one needs to go down a slippery slope...
