NEW DELHI, India--Dell Computer expects its Indian sales to maintain the triple-digit growth rates shown in the past few years, a senior company official said today.

Chip Saunders, Dell's president for the Asia-Pacific region, quoted figures from market researcher International Data Corp. that predict the Indian market will grow by more than 40 percent this year and by 50 percent next year. "And we believe that we will grow in multiples of those numbers...at triple-digit levels," he said today in the Indian capital of New Delhi.

Michael Dell, the company's chief executive, formally launched Dell's direct-sales strategy in India yesterday.

"Certainly, an objective for us would be to see India as one of the top countries in Dell's overall businesses," Dell said. "I think you'll see Dell aggressively go after this (India) market."

The company recently set up Dell Computer India, a fully owned subsidiary. Dell's products were earlier sold through local partners in India, notably Tata Infotech.

Dell executives said the company's sales in India have grown by more than 200 percent in the past few years.

The Asia-Pacific region, which accounted for about 8 percent of Dell's total revenues last year, is likely to be one of the fastest-growing markets for the company.

Dell, however, has no immediate plans to set up a manufacturing facility in India and will fill its orders from its plant at Penang in Malaysia.

"As our business grows, we will evaluate exactly the best way to meet the needs of the market," Dell said.

The company will initially focus on large corporations and government agencies, which will be billed in Indian rupees.
