Repeater Technologies (RPTR) How about a little game of word association? When you read the words "China" and "CDMA," what’s the first thing that comes to mind? If you’ve been following the wireless space even casually for the past several months, images of Qualcomm (QCOM) should be dancing through your head. Many stories have been written -- including one by The Full Nelson back in May -- discussing the Chinese government’s waffling on whether to build a wireless network using Qualcomm’s CDMA technology, rival technology called GSM, or some kind of combination of the two. Many were concerned about CDMA’s (and Qualcomm’s) prospects earlier this year after wireless company China Unicom (CHU) said it was backing off from deploying CDMA. But the CDMA build-out question is not exclusively a Qualcomm issue. Repeater Technologies -- which makes infrastructure products for CDMA networks and has relationships with Great Wall, one of China’s top wireless companies -- also is heavily leveraged to CDMA’s success. Repeater’s name hasn’t made the China-CDMA coverage much, mostly because many are unfamiliar with the company, which went public in August at 9. Shares closed Thursday at 15. Earlier this week, a Chinese government official made a public statement that many construed to mean that China was not dropping CDMA entirely. Wireless insiders now say they are “cautiously optimistic” about the possibilities of CDMA in China. News and rumors are sure to continue to circulate until an official decision is announced. When the CDMA news does break -- assuming it is a “go” -- investors could do well to think of more than just Qualcomm.
