Tuesday October 3, 4:43 pm Eastern Time Press Release PE Biosystems Completes Purchase of Pleasanton Site FOSTER CITY, Calif.--(BW HealthWire)--Oct. 3, 2000--PE Biosystems Group (NYSE:PEB - news), a PE Corporation business now conducting business under the Applied Biosystems name, today announced it has completed the purchase of an 80-acre site in Pleasanton, CA from the Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corporation. Having completed the transaction, Applied Biosystems has taken control of the property at 6177 Sunol Blvd. The Pleasanton City Council approved a measure granting the company development of the site in July. ``This purchase is an expansion for Applied Biosystems, not a move,'' said Michael W. Hunkapiller, Ph. D., president of Applied Biosystems. ``Demand for our products is increasing as more academic, biotechnology and pharmaceutical customers take advantage of advances in DNA and protein analysis technology. We need to add both employees and facilities to meet that demand, and Pleasanton offers us this opportunity.'' The company intends to locate approximately 2,600 employees in Pleasanton in phases over a 10-year period. Following due diligence the company has decided to take down the eight buildings on site and construct new office, laboratory and light manufacturing facilities. Phase I of the proposed new facility is estimated to be complete and ready for occupancy about the end of calendar year 2002. The company intends to refine this timeline as it goes through the design, construction, and regulatory process. Plans for additional phases of construction would be determined based on future business growth. ``We appreciate the dialogue that has been established with the Pleasanton City Council, city government and local residents,'' Dr. Hunkapiller said. ``We intend to continue providing information on our progress and our plans to add value to the community by providing transportation alternatives and supporting local organizations.'' Applied Biosystems currently provides Foster City employees with shuttle service between the office and BART's Daly City and Hayward stations, along with Caltrain's Hillsdale station. The 6177 Sunol Blvd. site is located near the Dublin/Pleasanton BART station. Applied Biosystems also values partnerships with organizations in the local community. The company is currently partnered with schools in the mid-Pensinsula area to enhance teacher and student exposure to science. This commitment to education meets a need identified by the community and increases the potential for students to choose a field of study from which Applied Biosystems draws its employees. The company also sponsors community events that fund major health-care research initiatives. These community programs offer employees a chance to volunteer for a local organization they value. PE Corporation comprises two operating groups. The PE Biosystems Group, now conducting business under the Applied Biosystems name, develops and markets instrument-based systems, reagents, software and contract services to the life science industry and research community. Applied Biosystems is headquartered in Foster City, CA and reported sales of $1.4 billion during fiscal 2000. The Celera Genomics Group (NYSE: CRA - news), headquartered in Rockville, Md., intends to become the definitive source of genomic and related medical information.
