COs did not go to jail
I knew a CO in college who was sent to Vietnam (one of only two he said). He was assigned to deliver CARE packages to friendly villagers.

By the way, COs did not go to jail, they were assigned non- combat duties, like medic.

I don't know the specifics but would be interested in finding them. If I can find some time today then I'll work on gathering that info.
