Soaring U.S. Natural Gas Demand Poses Twin Challenge

By Spencer Swartz

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept 28 (Reuters) - As demand for clean-burning natural gas
soars in the United States, the industry faces a two-fold challenge: winning approval to
lay new pipelines and opening protected public lands to drilling.

"I don't think there's any question that new pipeline capacity (in the U.S.) will be needed in order to
meet projected demand," said Charles Mankin, director of the Oklahoma Geologic Survey, citing, like
some industry analysts, gas demand increases of 40-45 percent expected by 2015.

"But you're not going to build new pipelines unless you have some certainty that you'll have the gas
supplies", which in turn requires greater access to federal lands, he said.

Both issues are bound to stir heated debate from all sides: from environmentalists, who oppose drilling
in sensitive areas like the Arctic; land owners, who balk at any plan to run pipelines through their
"backyard"; and industry, which claims meeting future demand needs both new lines and new gas fields....
