More forecasts on TSMC and UMC:

Chipmakers that make semiconductors on a made-to-order basis may rise. TSMC's shares have fallen 38 percent since their year high on Feb. 11. Nine analysts polled by IBES International have increased their 2000 earnings per share forecast for the company in the last month while seven have boosted their 2001 EPS forecast. IBES reports analysts on average expect TSMC to increase its 2001 EPS to NT$7.953, a 57 percent increase from an estimated NT$5.07 in 2000.

United Microelectronics Corp. shares have fallen 36 percent from their year high on Jan. 27. Analysts polled by IBES expect UMC's 2001 EPS to be NT$5.268, a 39 percent increase from an estimated NT$3.792 in 2000.

TSMC (2330 TT ), the world's biggest chipmaker on a made-to-order basis and the biggest company by market value on the island, fell NT$4.50, or 4.1 percent, to NT$106.50. United Microelectronics Corp. (2303 TT ), TSMC's biggest rival and the second biggest company in Taiwan by market value, fell NT$4.00, or 5.6 percent, to NT$67.00.

Using the consensus estimates, UMC ordinary shares are currently trading at 17.7X 2000 earnings and 12.7X 2001 earnings. That is extremely cheap considering earnings are expected to grow by 39%.
