Japan's IT Services Market Forecast to Grow 9 Pct. in 2000
September 29, 2000 (TOKYO) -- Based on its own market survey, the Dataquest unit of GartnerGroup Japan KK expects the value of the IT services market in Japan to reach 7.62 trillion yen in 2000, representing a 9.0 percent increase over the 6.99 trillion market of 1999.

The Dataquest unit announced Sept. 27 its estimate for growth of Japan's domestic IT service market in 2000.

Moreover, given the aggressive plant and equipment plans of corporations in and after 2001, Dataquest predicts that growth will continue at an average yearly pace of 11.4 percent, carrying the market to a value of 11.78 trillion yen in 2004. (107.41 yen = US$1)

Dataquest gave several reasons for the broad growth of the domestic IT service market in 2000, citing the strategic importance of IT, the spread of outsourcing by businesses, and the proliferation of outside specialists that the rapid advance of technology has spurred.

The company also spotlighted four areas of high growth in the market: (1) the construction and operation of CRM-related systems for the manufacturing, distribution and financial industries, (2) the construction of supply chain management systems, including electronic procurement systems, (3) the expansion and operation of online trading systems for banks and securities companies, and (4) the construction and operation of networks and security-related services.

Notable in 2000 was the trend for outsourcing of systems operation and management. Dataquest predicts that this particular market will grow by an average annual rate of 17 percent between the years 1999 and 2004.

It anticipates not just the outsourcing of IT functions, but the widespread adoption of business process outsourcing (BPO), in which companies contract out their entire IT operations.
