Halifax halts launch of Net bank on systems fear

BY CAROLINE MERRELL, BANKING CORRESPONDENT

HALIFAX has postponed the online launch of its Internet bank indefinitely, fearing the system might crash. Intelligent Finance (IF) will instead open today as a telephone banking operation.
The launch is already running two months behind schedule, adding another £2 million to budgeted start-up costs of £90 million this year.

Gordon Brown, the Chancellor, was due to give his blessing on the original launch date in July, before technical problems forced Halifax to put the venture on hold.
