But one serious sentence (or two) -- I generally find extremes at either end are not workable solutions. People are people; they will always have vices, and "fixing" one will just result in the growth of others. Still, I think that humanity is improving socially, politically, economically, and medically. I believe we are at the peak of "civilized behavior", but that it will get even better over time. Think about what life was like 100 years ago. 500 years ago. 2000 years ago. Would you go back? Live in a log cabin? Or a mud hut? Be a serf? Or a slave? Die from diseases that we can cure with a single shot now? The average life span in this country has improved in this century from the low 40s for men and women to the current high 70s/low 80s. We've almost doubled the average life span within a single lifespan -- this, to me, is incredible! (Incidentally, this is also the first time in history that the average female lifespan is greater than the average male). Of course, not every corner of the globe is going to progress at the same rate, but even the worst corners of the globe are better off than they were 100 years ago on average. Unfortunately, I'm just enough of a pessimist to believe that we will always have crime and wars, simply because there will always be people who believe that something that someone else has should be theirs. Since the general direction of civilization is toward democracy rather than totalitarinism, these people have the freedom to act on these impulses. But you can't get rid of the bad parts of Freedom without getting rid of the good parts. FWIW, I think that the next big area "people" need to improve on is the area of personal responsibility -- accepting that you can control your own destiny and accepting the consequences of your actions. So I guess I'm an optimist about humanity and believe that continued "baby steps" are the best way to go. When you think about it, the number of years that "modern humans" have been on the planet is an itty, bitty, teeny, weeny, miniscule little eyeblink of time, all things considered. I think we've made an amazing amount of progress (the dinosaurs never got this far and they had 165 million years <G>), and I think we continue to make progress (including making progress on the side-effects that our past "progress" has caused <G>). As for the Republican/Democrat stuff, I believe the Republicans are good at worrying about the economic issues of the country and the Democrats are good at worrying about the social issues. I think we need both, and that we need to balance their activities to avoid extreme solutions. Okay, maybe about 30 sentences. Didn't realize there was so much pent-up stuff there <G>. Sorry. Dave
