we can hope the Irish don't know "gold is dead":
Grave concern' over Ireland's rising inflation

BY JANET BUSH, ECONOMICS EDITOR

THE Irish Republic's central bank yesterday expressed "grave concern" about the country's soaring inflation rate and gave warning that the current boom could end in recession if wage increases are not kept under control.
In its quarterly economic report, the central bank said that inflation, currently running at 6.2 per cent may be accelerating. It said: "Of major concern is the possibility of inflationary expectations developing a momentum of their own."

The bank said: "If inflation were to continue at an excessive level, the competitiveness of the Irish economy would be seriously impaired over time and the indigenous sector, in particular, would suffer."

It said that, with wage rises currently averaging 7.25 per cent, the Irish economy was vulnerable to recession and wage restraint was needed. However, its warning coincided with comments from Ireland's biggest union which appeared to threaten industrial action to achieve wage increases to compensate for rising inflation.
