Kash - RE: "They would be better off delaying PiV to Q1 next year and making sure its bug free and available in volume."

I agree, at the beginning of the year like the Pentium MMX came out in 1997.

The problem is lots of morale is riding on this chip. Nothing has been going right at Intel's future processor division lately, but the light at the end of the tunnel is the P4.

While Intel may have Willys stockpiled for a launch on Nov. 20, motherboards will have to ramp from ZERO because the 850 chipset required a new stepping. If Intel does another one of their joke launches at the end of November what will happen to the people that can't get their 1.5GHz P4 in time for the holidays? What will parents say, "Sorry Johnny, you'll have to wait until the end of January for your Christmas present" ? P4 HYPE is SURE to create lots of demand for the processor, but I seriously doubt OEMs would be able to satisfy lots of orders by the end of December. Remember that guy who posted about a month ago his Dell 1GHz PIII ship date kept getting pushed back? Who's there to guarantee the same situation won't occurr with Willy. Besides, if they delay it they can create a somewhat larger supply of DRDRAM for the real launch, which could lower prices and allow it to better compete with the Athlon on price.

Yeah, they really should delay Willy until the beginning of next year. No question about it... They would even make more profit selling a high-end PIII rather than a P4.
