Kirk,

The problem is that Democracy only works when the more part of the people are moral and decent and "personally responsible"! This is exactly where we are declining as a society. Extended periods of prosperity seem to bring self-gratification, selfishness, and immorality. These characteristics have and will destroy civilization. The "Jerry Springerizing" of our society will destroy it.

I agree with you that we seem to be on the decline w.r.t. personal responsibility, but I also believe that we'll turn around when it gets bad enough. I don't see us declining forever and ever. The pendulum will swing back, just as it does when we get too far to the "left" or "right". I don't think this period of time is unique -- I believe, though I can't prove it, that humans have gone through constant periods of more and less sense of personal responsibility (as well as many other personal characteristics). And in general we keep moving up and to the right.

As a personal example, the Clinton thing has caused me to codify a lot of my thoughts about personal responsbility and I've written them down for my children (some are still a little advanced for 5 years olds, so I dole them out as appropriate <G>). If Clinton makes enough people think about it, then something good comes of the whole mess.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Dave
