Tom, this is the best explanation I have read, posted here by gabriel as your question has been raised before.

No it Definitely doesn't follow price change, and that's why I find it so helpful. It Lets you know about distribution and accumulation going on before it shows up in the price movements many times, and gives clues about sudden pops or drops coming. I sort my Qcharts watchlist by money flow and find it really helpful as stocks move up and down the list intraday. A sudden climb up or down the list always seems to precede a price and or volume move up or down.
