Compaq was very successful with their first sub-$1000 PC four years ago.

Exactly. That's my point. Packard Bell brought out the first sub-$1000 PC in something like 1991 or 1992 and cratered. But by 1996, the sub-$1000 PC could be built profitably and Compaq, Dell, et. al. made money at it.
