mr mark, I 'built' it and the 3 year warranty was standard for this model - not priced separately. I looked at the Inspiron 4000 and it has a 1 year warranty standard. By the time I pay for 3 years and equip it the same way, it costs about the same as the 5000. I don't want an eraserhead pointing device. That eliminates several brands. 600MHz is fast enough for me since even my 400 MHz desktop seems speedy enough. 10 GB of HD seems huge. I filled only about 3 GB on the desktop in 15 months. The large screen is important. There's a docking station for about $170 for people who use the laptop as a desktop replacement. Printer, scanner, keyboard, external monitor can all be wired to the docking station. The laptop slips in through one connector. But I'm not sure I need that. I think I'll only have charting software, 1-2-3 and the browser and little else on the laptop, i.e. the frequently used software. Now I need to shop for a wireless LAN to connect the two PCs. I lean towards Intel or Proxim now. Both claim it can work up to 150 feet through air. But I've seen reports that through walls it can be as little as 40 feet. The idea is to be able to use the laptop anywhere in the house and backyard - near the house. I've been looking and trying out laptops in stores for months. It's my first notebook and no delivery date has been set yet. I think it may be 10 days or less. Dell will let me know early next week. Gottfried
