Did you know that if it the island I am thinking of (dang, the name fails me), the inhabitants are the offspring of Europeans who were escaping imprisonment a few hundred years ago? And do you also know that this same culture almost exterminated itself? No crap. I saw a documentary about the island, and archaeologists have pieced together the folklore that has been passed on through the generations. When the first inhabitants landed, there wasn't enough women to go around. So, the "whites" had all the native men murdered so that they could keep the women for themselves. And then (women being as benign as they are), the women started internal squabbles and got some of the men on their side, and the men continued to murder each other to please the women. One whole generation of children was brought up where murder was common. Their very fathers were being killed off, one by one. The last remaining man on the island is the father of most of the bloodlines. Know what saved the culture? Christianity. He found a bible in a trunk that had survived the shipwreck, and started preaching. Indeed, the religion on that island is a unique version of Christianity. He took some of the passages out of context, and blended in his own creative needs, and within a few months, things had settled down. Like I said, I am not pulling your leg. The TV documentary exists - I saw it last year. And now the culture is known and revered around the world as being loving, accepting and benign. Like I said, one cannot appreciate light until one has been through the darkness. canuck-l-head
