JDN,

Monday morning quarterbacking I guess one could easily say RMBS was a disaster for INTC but what about the facts at the time the decision was made. Why did they make it?

Maybe the management lost confidence in their technical people, in their ability to beat the competition with better technology.

So they come up with these schemes to corner the market. Rambus is just one of them. There are numerous examples of half baked technologies pushed by Intel management / marketing whose only value is to corner the market.

Maybe the management got tired of the technical guys getting all the credit, so they wanted to make a "contribution" themselves by entering into a licensing scheme like the one with Rambus.

BTW, if you think that you have seen the worst of Rambus, think again. Rambus is a snake that Intel saved from dying. The snake promissed that it will not bite Intel.

So far all of the wounds that Intel suffered in relation to Rambus were self inflicted. Just wait until Rambus sues Intel in order to extract more money. Intel revenue is a very juicy target, and surely Rambus has a long term target to get a percentage of it.

Well, you know how the tale ends. The snake bites it's saviour.
The saviour asks: "Why did you bite me?"
The snake answers: "Because I am a snake."
