Good point about HDSL for base stations; you are right, it isn't just a PBX/leased line
strategy- this is a great market, since wireless is growing faster than even the internet.

Do you know if there is any movement to use a cell or packet based transport
technology from the base station to the switch, instead of, say, the GSM A-interface, for
3G? It would seem you can save bandwidth, since cellular voice is already compressed,
by transporting it compressed all the was to the MSC. I know I was astounded to
discover that Ericcson used 64 kbps links, instead of the 16 kbps actual voice, for
transport from the BSC to the MSC- you can save a lot of money by supporting some
type of compression, I thought.

I'm falling behind in cellular standards, but I know at the higher levels they are working
with VOIP committees at the IETF, except they are using high level signaling over ATM,
not IP, it seems.
