H James: There are so many questions to ask: How much is really understood about the relationship between technology and productivity? I believe that is the most important gap in the understanding of the "new economy". Look at all the things that still need to get done. Look all the opportunities on a global scale to improve productivity -- meaning to do more or create more value with more effective use of resources -- there is so much room for improvement and so much knowledge to be harnessed to move us forward. So much potential for a better world. But "technology"? What is that? How important is mobile computing? There is money to be made in mobile computing --just look at RIMM this week -- but looking out over the next 5 to 10 years, the name of the game is going to change. The "leading" internet companies are already a joke. As the heavy hitters of the new economy come up to bat over the next few years, perhaps it will become obvious that we have just begun to scratch the surface of the "new economy".

The company's highest expense, labor costs for couriers, who average about 2.5 deliveries an hour, has stayed at about $12 per hour. Other overhead costs — rent at $10 to $12 per square foot, management costs, technology and others — have led to deficits. But Kozmo officials, who refused to discuss their balance sheets in detail, expect to make a profit in Manhattan soon.

The keys, said officials at the company, which has four warehouses in Manhattan, are to increase the number of deliveries couriers make per trip and the amount each customer is paying per order, and to build warehouses that can quickly get orders off the shelves. (Kozmo's newest warehouse in Manhattan, on East 45th Street near First Avenue, can process every order in about one minute, officials said.)

You can tell this is an Amazon company. Balance sheet is a secret and profitability soon?? Soon can be millions of years depending upon the time frame reference.
