TP,
Hi!!

RE:

To re-hash history, Dell made an agreement with Data General to sell some servers, but mostly their line of small to mid size storage (Clarion I think). They were gaining market share. Then EMC bought Data General. Dell had never made a purchase of a company and I don't think they even bid on Data General.
Well they were left with small scale server attached storage devices. Then they bought ConvergeNet. This company is reputed to have fiber-channel designs for storage, but they had no storage management software, so it's delayed. In the mean time they made a deal with NTAP and then dropped the deal. In the mean time ConvergeNet is supposed to release something next year, which in Dell's case could mean anything from January to late February (unless they mean end of next year which would really be too late).

However, if Dell ever gets a product out, they could produce in quantities, configuration, and cost that could rock the storage world.

Yeah, this is what really frustrates one when they see this stock dropping...Question is whether or not the word "investor" really means just that...I'm probably wrong but I thought it meant advanced planning in a company's projected possibilities for gaining revenue and profit...Planning ahead :o)...Strategy for stealing market share...etc...And, then investigating whether or not they were actually on that path...Well, reading everything and absorbing everything you can is IMO just one of the many ways one can evaluate this situation..The other one (which I prefer to use above all) is actually seeing for oneself if the future is what they claim is upon them? This past July a number of us attended yet another shareholders meeting and discovered Round Rock putting up an incredible amount of square footage ....Adding to the manufacturing facilities that already boggle one's mind...Just last evening I get confirmation from JD Main that the third manufacturing facility that we were told was underway (underground piping already in progress 7/2000) was a reality...His current sources matched our July investigation...So, what's this got to do with storage TP?
Upon entering the Convention Center on the day of the meeting I headed immediately to the storage racks where a DELL representative informed precisely of their intentions...Convergenet if you will remember was under attack by KUMAR and I was most curious to find out all I could concerning this venture that would perhaps lead the long term investors into the food chain of EMC...I was impressed by her presentation and her confidence in stating that it was for real...Well, that not being enough I even sought out (on her advice) Jim Vanderslice...Upon introducing myself and welcoming a former New Yorker to Texas... :o) I found his description and comments identical to the representative at the display area...Was this not good enough I would also remind everyone once again that Jim Vanderslice when asked the question at the actual meeting about STORAGE and CONVERGENET immediately took the microphone and assured everyone that "it was well worth waiting for...This was a winner"...He also reminded everyone that he had spent twenty plus years at IBM dealing solely with just STORAGE....
TP...I find it incredibly hard to believe that my knowledge exceeds others at anything...IMO some are just throwing money away leaving this company...Kevin Rollins over the weekend basically reiterated that DELL's growth rate has no where near been reached to date...It's the same thing that Tom Meredith told me to my face the previous year...You see the reaaaaal problems here...Many are thinking about tomorrow...Management has been thinking in terms of the future...
What an opportunity this is...DELL has always climbed the ladder...Those that doubted their model have missed the run...As Meathead has implied...Take a look at the EMC and SUNW market cap and ask yourself where you should be investing today...DELL has proven itself repeatedly...EMC and SUNW with those 53 and 51% margins IMO is an incredibly large target for the umbrella that DELL has operated under for years...

Best, kemble
