Hi t2, you're are right on. I am thinking much the same thoughts. During this period of weekness, I've been able to pick up a bunch more NT, and some JDSU and DIGL. I must say it's been exciting for me that I've finally been able to get more shares of good stocks that have been too expensive until now. Anyway, I am also thinking things will trade in a tight range for at least the first half of October and maybe the last half as well. Then we should start to see things pick up starting November. I have a little more cash, so I'm looking to pick up more Cisco if they ever dip down to $50, but I don't think it's very likely. Anyway, good luck to all!

t2, How quickly the simplicity of staggering bandwidth demand can be forgotten. Does not seem to be slowing. Market gyrations notwithstanding, the infrastructure needs to be built first and foremost. BTW, it's good to see Dr. Todtman surface after a long quiet period. He is usually a good contrarian indicator close to bottoms. <GGG>

Optical market grows 14% in 2Q00 according to Dell'Oro

ATM switch sales surge in WAN

9/1/2000 The total optical telecommunications market grew to $5,937 billion in the second quarter of 2000—a quarter-to-quarter increase of 14%—says a study by the Dell'Oro group (Portola Valley, California). The figures included long haul DWDM, metropolitan area DWDM, and SONET/SDH.
Buoyed by sales of the Optera LH product, Nortel revenues jumped 34%. Other vendors showing overall significant Q/Q growth in the optical market were Ciena and Cisco with 28% and 53% growth respectively (see Table 1).

Table 1. Market leaders for total optical market (based on revenue)

The metropolitan area DWDM market grew 40% in the quarter, rising to $80.9 million. Again, Nortel posted top revenue numbers, more than double those posted by their nearest competitors. Ciena and ONI followed, with quarter-to-quarter growth of 73% and 160% respectively (see Table 2). OC-48 continues to be the most popular speed shipped.

I just have a feeling that Csco, NT, ADCT picked up a lot of Lucent business. As a result, the few players will be able to keep up the growth rates---considering the barriers to entry.

I hope you're right. If Cisco warns, we may be looking back on September fondly...
