"As much as I agree with you, Mike, that this recent change in market psychology was instigated by Wall Sreet, I think the recent (unforeseen) OPEC moves gave the investing world pause, and gave strength to Wall Street's dissing of the comms market. What happens to ALL products, sectors, and strategies, in a world made less profitable by increased fuel costs? .... I believe that the world will eventually work its way around to understanding that communications is a partial answer to the problems imposed by high fuel costs: it is a sector that will generate superior returns."

Jim- I think I just read something (maybe on the NT thread) about some executive pointing out that air travel could be obseleted by video conferencing. Now before we all start laughing, IMHO, someday it will. The technology is here. It's just a matter of making it economically feasible to everyone involved. Maybe fuel prices will be a part of it.

I did spend a little time in Radio Shack a few days ago checking out their new digital TV from....Zenith(I think)? It was a 36" model and costs $2,000. It was about halfway between analog sets and true HDTV. It was hooked up to a Direct TV dish. I have to say, I was very impressed. For just a couple of thousand dollars and the Direct TV link, you can almost start counting the hairs on news anchors head. Although not working perfectly, when it did, it was very impressive. Best of all it was for real and available today. It's a dead serious threat(even more so than I thought before) to the MSOs and I'm certain they realize this.

It's pretty easy to imagine that video conferencing over this type of broadband connection, could really displace air travel someday. But of course, TV and two-way Internet are two totally different animals. It'll be many, many, many years before video conferencing reaches digital TV signal and digital TV level of quality. -MikeM(From Florida)

PS As Wall Street hammers telecom each and everyday for a month now, IMO the wall of worry will be scaled shortly. It'll be interesting to see what happens right after we reach the top.
