If I want a world with more reason, I should act with reason. The very process puts more reason in the world. Most of us want reason, but that is not universal. I was in 6th grade and a kid took a disliking to me. What precipitated this? I used the word "automobile" instead of "car". The person felt I was being intellectual. His family didn't like people who thought they were too smart. Gee, I didn't even remember saying the word and thought, how odd. I believe the reason given was genuine because he was in my classes on and off for 6 years! He was definitely not the brightest crayon in the box - angry at smart people "who thought they were better 'n him". By thinking such thoughts he created the reality. I wave at the migrants on my mountain biking route. They are riding their own bikes to their job at the winery. It started with a polite nod. Then a deeper more familiar nod. It now involves speaking "Hello!" and a wave and smile. We see each other every day. If I want to live in a world with respect, I think I should start off that way. I guess I could have started by flipping them off, but that wouldn't have produced the desired effect. If I ever fell, or needed a hand, I now know that these people would recognize me and help me. And the opposite is true. I'm hoping that I'm making their day more pleasant and by treating them with respect, we create a rapport. Both mainstream and extremist religion have that same problem, IMO. If you aren't part of it, you're "not one of us", but what "we are fighting". See, there I'm doing it again, speaking in that impersonal we. I don't feel this way, but I can see and understand that others do.
