No that just makes you boor I understand. What about the other people that think you are a boor, but think bodily functions ARE mentionable? Just kidding. Metaphor is a powerful tool. But the practice of comparing things that you know (and expect other people to also know ) ultimately fails because they only know it literally and not symbolically. The failure happens because they literally can't put it into an abstract concept. If you are talking about "work" and "being successful" it is not a metaphor, you are bragging about how good your are at your job. A logical disconnect occurs. Communication is lost. I had a friend, irreverent too, who called it intellectual impedance mismatch. Maybe it's only funny to engineers and physicists. It describes the process in which a signal is reflected and not absorbed.
