Petz,

I thought one of the Intel chips was supposed to have dual channel Rambus interface on-chip. Was that the Foster, and has it been changed?

There was nothing official from Intel about any of their chips having onboard northbridge, except Timna RIP.

Re: dual rambus

When P4 is released, the only chips available to support is will be one with dual rambus support (Tehema 850).

There is nothing in the CPU itself to prevent it from working with other chipsets that will support SDR or DDR SDRAM. The only problem is that none of these chipsets are going to available during p4 launch.

THe first chipset for P4 (foster) that will not be tied to Rambus is going to be (most likely) the server chipset from ServerWorks.

There was some speculation about Willy, second edition, the one that will increase the pincount from 420 or so to about 480. There was a lot of speculation that Intel must have added Northbridge to the CPU.

Originally, Elmer dismissed it saying that every CPU Intel produces is dual processor capable, and there is no reason to change it. The reports that came out since then sugest that Willy will be a not be SMP capable, which probably adds a little bit to the probability that the Willy - the next generation will have northbridge onboard.
