That's an interesting thought. I used to employ the number years ago when comparing my prospect companies, figuring the ones with the greatest sales per employee would have the largest ad budgets, and by revealing those rankings to them, I could sell more advertising space to them. For those with smaller numbers, I could show them what they were up against to give them a reason to increase their ad budgets. That worked.

But it was all done prior to the days of outsourcing in the wide scales we see today.

Might it make more sense to calculate profit per employee as a way to use the comparative ranks for our investment purposes? Doing this on a quarterly basis would give trendlines that could be quite revealing.
