<<Diversification is key Al Frank and John Buckingham's
remarkable success with value investing. This success
regularly lands Frank & Buckingham on the top of investment
newsletter monitor Mark Hulbert's performance list.
Buckingham just issued a list of 10 bargains, all of whom are
the top names in their respective industries. He advises
diversifying new money into as many of these as possible.
One of these picks is Ford Motor (F). In August 2000, Ford
announced a complex stock-swap plan that would return up to
$10 billion of its huge cash hoard to shareowners. But that
news was overshadowed by a recall of 46,000 of its troubled
Firestone tires, which are included in its top-selling
Explorer SUV. Nevertheless, Explorer sales hit a record in
August. "Consumers believe that the tires, not the car, are
the safety concern," Buckingham says.
Buckingham predicts a short-term earnings hit as Ford idled
three Explorer and Ranger assembly lines to replace the
offending tires. "But we think investors should take
advantage of recent price weakness by picking up the stock
below $26," he says, noting shares now trade for 6.3x
earnings and yield nearly 5%.>
