are you absolutely sure about this? Might there be a performance penalty by porting a CPU designed for Rambus to other forms or RAM?

I am not absolutely sure, but that is my understanding. I am not sure what can be done in a CPU to work it better with one type of memory over other. The CPU just requests data from some memory location, and it is up to the Northbridge part of the chipset to decide how to go about fetching this data.

The fact that the only chipset available for P4 will be Rambus based gives AMD a lot of breathing room for next 3 quarters. Intel will be on the defensive until 2H 2001, when SDRAM based chipsets will become available. The only hope between now and then is faster than anticipated conversion of P3 to .13u process technology.
