Karen, As you can see, I'm WAY behind on this thread, and this is probably too late to respond - but I have to thank you SO MUCH for posting this Schwarzkopf interview on Booknotes! I loved what he had to say about the Civil War.It was wonderful - and you are right - he is a great hero. And I have to add that so was his boss, the then-Secretary of Defense Cheney - who let Powell and Schwarzkopf do the public talking on TV but who was in charge of the whole defense effort. Watching Cheney in the V-P debate last night made me realize what a major intellect and character we could have doing the country's business for us - if we have the good sense to elect him.
