No question about that. The great aspect of art is that it is all in the eye of the beholder. We can disagree about whether or not someone has a great voice. But to argue that a great vocal artist doesn't have to have a great voice in my mind is kind of like saying that a great jockey doesn't have to win horse races so long as he does everything else right.

Since my graduate work in neurobiology, I have always marveled at why it is that the human brain is even wired such that some sounds move our very souls while the other things we hear are simply the cacophony of our daily lives. I find this to be a breathtakingly improbable situation and yet, here we are, enjoying Satchmo, Frankie, and Ludwig.
