Doug,
RE:"I'd go USB or SCSI, I've yet to see an IDE burner work reliably past 2x"..

I used to think that until I bought a Plextor and TDK.
They record well at 8X (full speed) and rip at 20x.

I also have a Philips...no contest.
Jim

RE:"If you're looking for a SCSI solution I really like my plextor drive, the one drawback is that I have to buy certain grades of CDs (not all 8x certified ones work properly), but it hasn't buffer underrun the entire time I've had it. "

I've had the best luck with blank CDs that use blue or gold dye solution. Like TDK, Sony or Kodak.
What about you?
Jim

Dear Doug:

My brother has a Ricoh 6X/4X/32X IDE drive. He has had no problems burning CD-Rs. He has had only one "coaster" made and that was due to a power failure during the burn (isn't thunderstorms a drag?).

A few caveats:

1) He runs on a K6-2/450 with 128MB PC100 CAS3 on a Soyo motherboard.
2) He burns when running Linux (currently Mandrake 7.2 (beta)).
3) He browses, listens to MP3 files playing, and has downloads in progress off the internet (Try that with Windows (any flavor)).

My father burns at 4x with Linux on a Pentium 133 with 128MB SDRAM. But, his drive is SCSI (Panasonic 7502).

You can get an Acer drive for $189 at Multiwave spec'd at IDE 12x/10x/32x (this may be the same Sanyo drive that Plextor uses but I am not sure) retail (usually means at least 1 CD-RW disk, 1 CD-R disk, cables, software).

I hope this helps.

Pete
