I don't think that the U.S. voters will ever embrace a libertarian President. And I doubt that too many would ever make it in to congress either. Too much focus on individuals taking responsibility for their lives instead of expecting the government to fix all of their problems. I think that the general population likes to view themselves as victims and that the world owes them something. Politicians are all to willing to cultivate this as each new law and each new benefit that the government enacts, gives them more power.

The weird thing is that libertarians are considered somewhat radical. Generally, the philosophies that libertarians follow are all found in the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights.

The best government is a hobbled government...IMO, of course.

HB, I'm voting for him, but that mere fact is enough to assure him zero chance of winning. -g-

The proportion of internet users who are libertarian with a small "l" and/or Libertarian with a big "L" (members of the Libertarian party) is much higher than that of the rest of the population. I've often wondered why - demographics, maybe, higher percentage of educated, affluent, young, white males? But I don't really think that's the complete explanation because there are more libertarian/Libertarian women, too. Something about the Internet and libertarianism goes together.

libertarian candidate: too radical for US voters? i like his ideas...

I agree. I see the Democrats, Republicans, and Libertarians all as warped in certain directions, but the main reason I try to support the Libertarian party whenever possible is that their views (assuming enough get elected) would go a long way toward countering the statist tendencies of both the Republicans and Democrats. This is kind of like Modern Portfolio Theory applied to politics -- consider how the individual politician interacts with and complements the existing portfolio of politicians rather than considering each politician in isolation.

To all who agree, send a message and register Libertarian (rather than independent). You can always vote for other candidates if you find a particular Libertarian objectionable.
