LOL...i wasn't aware of this meaning of 'coddle'. anyway, i agree with JXM, that people simply live under the impression that the state 'owes' them somehow, and many politicians do everything in their power to further that sentiment. in exchange, people accept that their personal freedom is being chipped away, piece by piece. in fact, as long as others are concerned, a constriction of freedom isn't even deemed worth thinking about. while i can't really comment on the US situation, in Europe, 'big brother' type government control is already a reality...in Britain there's even video surveillance of public places. it's all fine and dandy, until it is abused...
