Paul,

They "claim" to have a fix/workaround already identified.

There is never a problem that Intel can't fix, given three weeks.

Paul, >Intel's delay delivering Pentium 4 processors stems from a chipset problem the company has now corrected.

I read the article twice trying to find more info on the statement above. Your wording gives a little more info. I wonder if it's a microcode fix, or any silicon spin involved? What's the level of confidence that the fix works the first time?

They "claim" to have a fix/workaround already identified.

Below is good PR for a change:

At least one PC maker that asked not to be identified praised Intel's decision to hold up the Pentium 4, even though the problem affected only a small number of customers.

Paul,
RE:"So far, it doesn't appear to be a Rambus-related issue."

Man, finally, a non-Rambus related glitch. It's about time.

Here's a question. If Intel had to choose between three "ready now" chipsets for P4. Which one would they choose to launch with?
a. Rambus
b. DDR
c. SDRAM
d. None of the above

Paul, I missed this the first time I read the article: In August, Intel recalled the 1.13-GHz Pentium III processor. Two PC makers said they expect to begin selling systems with a revised version of the chip by about the third week of October.

Guess my reading ability is being impaired by the red ink I'm seeing everywhere. Anyway, good chance to see if the new Intel policy of "don't ship it until it's ready" (I can hear the 'droids snickering already) will be for real. No wine (chip) before its time, I like that.
