Dear Joe:

The 1Gb chips are in the labs. They are not yet sampling. The DDR map shows that 1Gb chips would be in production before DDR-II starts up.

Since 512MB DIMMs are available now (registered) and 1GB DIMMs are scheduled (possibly sampling but not sure), 4 DIMMs yield 2GB now and may yield 4GB in the near future. Since 32 bit apps can not work with more than 4GB (per CPU (2GB is more likely for most OS)), only SMP would really see a need for more than 4 DIMMs. X86-64 would make use of it but will not need it until Q2 at the earliest. By then, AMD77x chipset family will be out relieving even that problem.
