Re: One more rally in techs...

From CNNfN

"The market is waiting to see the earnings because that is your first catalyst in the market that can possibly dispel the slower than expected growth that the market is anticipating," said Barry Hyman, chief investment strategist at Weatherly Securities. "The market is very split today. People are just looking for reasons to own some things and reasons to sell others."

-----------------------------------------------------

Everyone expects Q3 earnings to save tech. I believe they will short term. Mostly because we are at oversold levels and people are still in very conditioned to buy the dips. However, shortly after earnings I expect the focus to switch to Q4 and beyond. With the slowing economy, high oil prices and reduced telecom spending I don't see how the Nasdaq can make a new short term highs. The failure to break the recent highs around 4250 yet again and future earnings expectations will send us back down to spring levels or lower. If multiples contract it could get very ugly.

Now if we take out 3500 and re-test spring lows now then I'll have to rethink my scenario a bit. Either one is possible, but I'm betting on the first in a manner of speaking. If we get a blowoff day (5%+), I could see myself day trading a few techs for 10%+ gains. On a selective basis there are some very cheap techs out there - especially if we get a near term blowoff.

I still think energy is safe for at least the next 3 months probably 6.

Looks like we have a similar market read, George.

Have added some to my gold stock positions recently.

BUT continue to stay with a strong over weight in the NG E&Ps, a few select OS and infrastructure plays that have a ways to go yet.

See them among if not THE leaders in the next rally phase Hays is talking about.

Even if that rally fails to materialize, and we end up with more sideways action, stock picking is clearly more important than last year and early this year for those who want to outperform the sector indices.
