I was intrigued by your post, the one I responded to, because it very intelligently raised the issue of how much data capacity a satellite can have. I've spent the entire day on this and have decided that the only way to get the answers is to write to the individual companies and ask.

I don't know if you are aware of it, but Gilat for one has solved the problem of uplink without a land line. I am kicking myself for not accepting the offer to be one of the trial subscribers, it's being tested in my area, but I was busy and missed the deadline. They say they will roll it out for real fourth quarter 2000. We'll see. Hughes DirectPC is available here, but RoadRunner remains a better deal, faster and cheaper, and of course DirectPC needs a land line for the uplink.
