dictionary vs phonetic (ie. spoken words)

Understood. These greetings have some traditional overtones, however, and it's my (limited) experience that they are pronounced a little more formally.

Maybe somebody who actually knows something can weigh in on this issue. Almost invariably, an exchange between me and someone else in the Arabic-speaking world would produce one of two questions: #1 hel enta muslim (Are you a muslim?) #2 hel enta isra'ayli? (Are you Israeli?)

Both questions were suggested by my accent. Same deal in the German-speaking world, where it was "Sind Sie Holländer?" (Are you Dutch?)
