PC Sales in Japan in Second Week of September Drop Before Win Me Debut
October 2, 2000 (TOKYO) -- The average price of Windows 98 PCs dropped sharply in the second week of September, because Windows Millennium Edition's (Windows Me's) launch date, Sept. 22, was drawing close.

The PC sales in the second week of September 2000 (Sept. 4-10) decreased by 2.3 percent in volume and also decreased by 5.5 percent in value from the previous week. The average retail price fell to 178,614 yen from the previous week's 184,781 yen, down by 6,167 yen. (107.41 yen = US$1)

Compared with the same week of the previous year (Sept. 6-12, 1999), PC sales increased by 36.0 percent in units and by 18.1 percent in value, according to the statistics compiled by GfK Japan Ltd. (*1)

The recently released VAIO PCG-F70/BP of Sony Corp., an all-in-one A4-sized notebook PC with a 14-inch TFT-LCD, was priced below 200,000 yen. This triggered a drop in the average selling prices of notebook PCs by 7,332 yen from the previous week to 205,051 yen, breaking the 210,000-yen mark for the first time.

The average selling price for desktop PCs also fell by 3,531 yen, making the average retail prices for the whole PCs were 178,614 yen, below the 180,000 yen mark for the first time.

PC sales in volume have leveled off for these two weeks, and those in value have been decreasing due to drops of the retail prices. Compared with the same week of the previous year, PC sales for the second week of September increased by 30-40 percent in volume, but only around 10-20 percent in value.
